China’s Ex-Justice Minister Faces Life Sentence Over Bribery
Tang, who additionally held the position of chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was stripped of political rights for life.
A court in Xiamen, located in east China's Fujian province, delivered the sentencing.
The ruling mandates that Tang's personal wealth be seized, with all unlawfully obtained proceeds to be reclaimed and deposited into the state treasury, according to the verdict.
Judicial authorities determined that spanning 2006 through 2022, Tang exploited his authority across Zhejiang and Liaoning provinces, along with his position as justice minister, to grant improper favors to individuals involving corporate public offerings, land repurchase agreements, banking credit arrangements and legal case management. He unlawfully pocketed over 137 million yuan (approximately $19.7 million) in currency and valuables as compensation.
The trial proceeded in open court on Sept. 11, 2025. During his closing remarks, Tang acknowledged culpability and demonstrated contrition.
The conviction arrives as China's official military media declared Monday that an inquiry into the nation's highest-ranking generals would "eliminate watered-down" combat capability within the armed forces.
"The resolute investigation and punishment of corrupt officials such as Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli removes obstacles and stumbling blocks that hinder the development of our cause," a front-page editorial in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Daily said on Monday.
Zhang, the PLA's top uniformed general, and Liu have been under investigation since last month over "suspected serious discipline and law violations," according to a Chinese Defense Ministry statement issued on Jan. 24.
